Rules of Tambola

The Ticket

Each Tambola ticket is a grid of 3 rows and 9 columns. Every row has exactly 5 numbers and 4 blank cells, giving 15 numbers per ticket. Numbers range from 1 to 90:

  • Column 1: numbers 1–9
  • Column 2: numbers 10–19
  • Column 3: numbers 20–29 … up to Column 9: 80–90

Reading the ticket: Teal cells = marked numbers. Gold cell = latest called number. Blank cells are inactive and don't count toward any award.

How the Game Works

  1. A caller (host) draws numbers from 1 to 90 one at a time, in random order.
  2. Players check their tickets. If a called number appears, they mark it.
  3. When a player completes a winning pattern, they claim the award.
  4. The host verifies the claim. Valid = prize won. Invalid = "Bogey" and the game continues.
  5. The game ends when all awards are claimed or all 90 numbers are called.

Standard Awards

These are the most common prizes. The host decides which to include and how many winners each allows.

AwardHow to Win
Early FiveBe the first player to have any 5 numbers on your ticket called
First LineAll 5 numbers in row 1 are called
Second LineAll 5 numbers in row 2 are called
Third LineAll 5 numbers in row 3 are called
Big CornerThe 4 corner numbers of your ticket (first & last number in rows 1 and 3) are called
Full HouseAll 15 numbers on your ticket are called — the grand prize!
Multiple tickets? Line awards continue across tickets. Row 4 = first row of ticket 2, and so on.
Custom awards: Hosts can create any award name ("Lucky 7", "Breakfast", etc.) with custom rules.

Important Rules

  • Only mark numbers that have actually been called.
  • Claim awards immediately when you complete the pattern — don't wait!
  • Wrong claims are rejected (Bogey). No penalty, keep playing.
  • The host's decision is final on all disputes.
  • Blank cells never count toward any award.
  • Once an award reaches its maximum winners, it's closed.
